Whether you’ve just qualified, feel like you’ve hit a wall, or you’re itching to progress -taking the first step towards a new role can feel exciting, daunting, and a bit overwhelming. So let’s break it down.
Before you start scrolling job boards or firing off CVs, pause. Ask yourself:
What do I actually want?
Not just “a new job” - but what kind of job? What matters most to you right now? Figure out your negotiables and non-negotiables and STICK to them!
Location – Are you open to commuting or hybrid? Or is being close to home non-negotiable?
Salary – What’s your baseline? What’s your ideal?
Company size – Do you thrive in a big corporate or prefer a tight-knit team?
Culture – What kind of people do you want to work with? What values matter to you?
And don’t forget to check the basics:
Know your notice period – is it 4 weeks, 1 month, 3 months etc. – this matters when you are getting down to the wire.
If you’re even slightly unsure about leaving, have a proper conversation with your line manager. If they value you, they’ll be honest about what’s possible. If they make promises, get them in writing!Because here’s the thing: if you’re half in, half out, and you accept a counteroffer from them later - it’s not just frustrating for recruiters and hiring managers, it’s a waste of your own time too. Let’s be brutally honest - if you are integral and irreplaceable, they shouldn’t be waiting for you to have another offer to make their move – this is not a bargaining tool.
Think Ahead – Your Future Matters
This isn’t just about your next job - it’s about your career.Ask yourself:
Where do I want to be in 5 years?
Am I settling for something safe now, or do I want exposure to different industries, systems, or leadership styles?
Do I want to move into a leadership role? Specialise? Go contracting?
What are my personal plans? Starting a family? Getting a dog? Moving house?
Your job needs to fit into your life - not the other way around – the world has changed.
Where to Look
Job boards like Reed and CV Library are full of adverts. They’re a good starting point, but don’t stop there.
LinkedIn is your best friend. Update your profile. Engage with posts. Follow companies and recruiters. This is where the real conversations happen.
Word of mouth is powerful. Chat to colleagues, friends, people in your network. Ask who they’ve worked with and who they’d recommend.
Recruiters – yes, I am biased but hear me out. A good recruiter will get to know you, not just your CV. Speak to a couple (2 - 3 max), get a feel for who you gel with, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. You’re trusting them with your career - make sure they’re the right fit. Make a good impression on them, when that dream role comes across their desk you want to be popping into their mind first!
Ask Questions Early
When you’re being approached about a role or see an advert that catches your eye, dig deep. Ask questions. Do research. What’s the team like? What’s the vibe? What’s the manager’s style? Recruiters often know the inside track - use that. This is your life, your career. It has to feel right.
Your Career Checklist
Here’s a quick checklist to help you get started:
What do I want from my next role?
What’s negotiable vs non-negotiable?
What’s my notice period?
Have I spoken to my current manager about progression?
What does my 5-year plan look like?
Have I updated my LinkedIn profile?
Am I speaking to 2–3 recruiters I trust?
Have I asked enough questions about each opportunity?
Does this role fit into my life plans?
Final Thought
You don’t need to rush. You don’t need to go with the first company that pops up on Google.
For the most part certain times of year are better for job hunt – January to June is perfect (try to avoid the summer – holidays slow everything down), October and November tend to be decent too (December – again holiday season, companies are a lot less likely to be recruiting).Take your time. Do your research. Speak to people.
And when you’re ready - make your move with confidence. You’ve got this!
